Bibimbap. London, UK

Image
June 2021 Flavour, texture, comfort, nutrients.  Is there a bowl more complete than Korea's bibimbap.  And it's utterly delicious to boot.  If you can't get to Korea, Lime Orange in London's Victoria hits the spot every time.  Understated, and with a heavily Korean clientele, the highlight has to be the volcanic bowl mounded with 7 vegetables, rice, an egg and your choice of protein.  Add hot sauce to taste, mix quickly and devour.  My personal favourite is with tofu - giant chewy cubes a wonderful contrast to the crispy shards of rise chiselled from the bottom of the bowl - the best bit!   This dish is everything you want on a winter's day.  Go when your fingers are frozen and the biting wind is piercing your clothes, and revel in the heartiness of the nutrients racing through your blood, warming you from the inside out. Find Lime Orange on Vauxhall Bridge Road, moments from Victoria train station.

Porridge Appreciation

Image
January 2021 Breakfast is probably my favourite meal of the day, whether a simple bowl of cereal or a decadent brunch, I often leap out of bed in anticipation.  Spring, autumn and winter, my go-to is porridge.   I love the comforting creaminess and the way I can feel it warming me from the inside, and I get excited by the endless topping possibilities so I’m sharing a few of my favourites.   Bay, my mum’s plum jam, nut butter and dukkah.   Infusing the milk with bay leaf whilst the oats soak imparts herbal notes which add a depth of flavour, and the sweetness of the jam is balanced by the savoury, toasted flavours of the dukkah. Custard.   I recently discovered that custard in porridge works exceptionally well – it’s great for balancing any tart fruits whilst also using up fridge leftovers.   Mince pie.   Following on from my custard discovery, I upped the festiveness over Christmas and added leftover mincemeat along with custard to create a se...

Cauliflower, Ginger and Turmeric Soup. My house, UK

Image
March 2020 Each week I get a vegetable box from the local farm.  This week, all I had left was the cauliflower so I decided to make some soup.  I was wondering how to jazz it up when I saw in the saucepan the finely chopped turmeric and ginger I had made a tea from earlier in the day.  I blended this in to the cauliflower soup and it worked! A light, nutritious, dairy free soup, with warming spices and a wonderful colour.

Bavarian Food With A Contemporary Twist. Munich, Germany

Image
February 2020 I actually really enjoy eating at restaurants on my own sometimes. It's a great opportunity for a bit of me time, plus it's much easier to get a space at popular, booked out restaurants. In Munich, chefs are taking inspiration from traditional, hearty Bavarian fayre and giving it contemporary twists - lightening it up, veganising it, playing around with local ingredients. Max Pett is the place to go. Relaxed, homely, just enough off the beaten track to feel like a neighbourhood secret (but not a well kept one judging by the constant flow of hungry diners flowing in) - everything you want for a warm, cosy evening, catching up with friends, or a quick bite to eat when you can't be bothered to cook, where every bite is a mouthful of goodness.  The soy wiener schnitzel with remolade, homemade fries and  date ketchup seemed to be a popular choice, although I went for the barley risotto - warming and filling, but maintaining a freshness at the same time. The...

Turmeric, ginger and lemon tea. My home, UK

Image
March 2020 Sometimes it feels as though spring may never spring.  For a mug of anti winter blues, finely chop turmeric root and fresh ginger, add plenty of lemon juice, and boil with hot water.  It's warming, a little spicy, refreshing and tastes like a mug of vitamins.  If nothing else, the vibrant yellow colour will instantly put a smile on your face.
