Cafe. Salcombe, UK

May 2021

My friend's parents have a flat in Salcombe so I've been lucky enough to spend several lovely weeks there over the years.  I've never found a place there that I really love - it almost feels like places know they will always be packed just from the sheer number of of visitors so they don't need to rely heavily on repeat business.

On my most recent trip there, I investigated the then newly opened The Salcombe Yawl, and it did stand out from the crowd.  The friendly staff are chatty and there was a fun vibe - it being Covid times with contactless payments and social distancing, they'd designed an ingenius payment system involving a card machine stuck to a badminton racket which is poked out of the hatch.

Whilst the milk in my flat white was sadly a bit Mr Whippyesque, I did like that they use Voyager Coffee beans, roasted just down the road in Buckfasleigh, and French hot chocolate.  Sandwich options are creative, mixing things up from the standard fillings at every other sandwich shop in the town - homemade mackerel pate was particularly tempting.  Right on trend with what seems to be something of a gourmet doughnut movement these days, work of art doughnuts arrive every Friday, but be quick, they're gone in minutes!

Find The Salcombe Yawl on Clifton Place, down by the water's edge.  They also have a cafe in Frogmore which also sells homewares and would make a lovely stroll along the ria from East Portlemouth.

If you want a great filling to bread ratio for your sandwich, another noteworthy place is The Salcombe Deli on Fore Street.  The Chicken Caesar has big chunks of juicy chicken with crisp lettuce, shaved parmesan and Caesar dressing between soft bread, fresh from the bakery down the road.

No trip to the seaside would be complete without an ice cream and Salcombe Dairy has you covered.  From gooey Salcombe Mud to the zingiest raspberry sorbet, grab a cone from either the town centre or The Winking Prawn at North Sands, and enjoy!
